What is an SRS module?
The SRS module (Supplemental Restraint System) is an electronic control unit responsible for the entire passive safety system in your vehicle. In simple terms - it's the "brain" behind your airbags, seatbelt pretensioners, and crash sensors.
Physically, it's a small metal box, usually mounted under the center console, beneath the driver or passenger seat, or near the central tunnel. It looks unassuming - a palm-sized rectangular housing with an electrical connector - but it plays a critical role in protecting lives during a collision.
Think of it like an air traffic control tower at an airport. The tower itself doesn't fly or land planes, but it decides when, where, and how every element of the system should act. The SRS module works similarly - it's not an airbag itself, but it decides which airbags deploy, when to tighten seatbelts, and how to react to an impact.
What does the SRS module do every day?
The SRS module works continuously whenever the engine is running (and often for a short time after it's switched off). Its main tasks include:
Monitoring sensors - the controller constantly reads data from crash sensors positioned at various points around the body shell (front, sides, sometimes rear). These sensors measure acceleration, and based on this data the module assesses whether a collision is occurring.
System diagnostics - every time you start the car, the module runs a self-test. It checks whether all sensors are responding, whether airbags are connected, whether seatbelt pretensioners are functioning correctly. If it detects a problem - it illuminates the airbag warning light on the dashboard.
Making split-second decisions - when sensors detect an impact, the module must decide which airbags to deploy within 15-30 milliseconds. That's faster than a single blink of an eye. Based on the direction, force, and type of impact, the controller selects the right combination - it might fire only the front airbags, the side curtains, or everything at once.
Recording events - every accident is stored in the module's memory as crash data. This is a permanent record of the collision that won't disappear when you disconnect the battery.
Why does the SRS module need repair after an accident?
Here's where the core problem lies. After a collision - even a relatively minor one - the SRS module typically enters a "fault" state and stops functioning normally. This happens for several reasons:
Crash data locks the module. After detecting an accident, the controller saves collision information to its memory and locks itself. This is intentional by the manufacturer - the module "knows" it was involved in a collision and won't allow normal operation until the data is cleared by a specialist. Deployed airbags = used detonators. If airbags fired during the accident, the module records that the corresponding detonators have been used. Even after fitting new airbags, the old record in the module causes a persistent error.
Electrical damage. The force of impact in an accident can physically damage the electronics inside the module - cracked traces on the circuit board, loose components, damaged connectors. In milder cases the module can be repaired; in severe cases it needs replacement.
Broken connections to sensors. Even if the module itself is fine, damaged wiring to crash sensors generates fault codes that the module interprets as a system failure.
How to tell if your SRS module needs repair
The most common symptom is the airbag warning light staying on. This light (it looks like a seated person with a circle in front of them - representing an airbag) should illuminate for 2-3 seconds after starting the engine and then turn off. If it stays on constantly or flashes - the SRS system is reporting a problem.
Other signs:
- The airbag light came on after a collision and won't turn off
- Diagnostic scan shows DTC codes related to the SRS module (e.g., B0001, B0051, B1000 - varies by manufacturer)
- The car was in an accident where airbags deployed, new airbags were fitted, but the light is still on
- You bought a previously crashed vehicle and the airbag light is active
Important: an illuminated airbag light means the system is inactive. Airbags will not deploy in a subsequent accident. This is not a cosmetic issue - it's a safety concern.
What can you do with a faulty SRS module?
You essentially have three options:
1. Replace with a new module from the dealer - the most expensive option. A new controller costs anywhere from 350 to over 1000 EUR depending on make and model, plus coding and adaptation costs. Requires a visit to an authorised dealer.
2. Replace with a used module - cheaper but risky. A used module from another car requires VIN reprogramming and adaptation. It may also have its own crash data history. We don't recommend this option without certainty about the module's condition.
3. Professional repair and crash data clearing - in most cases the smartest solution. This involves professionally removing the collision record from the module's memory, restoring it to factory condition. The module returns to full functionality, and you save up to 80-90% compared to buying new.

What does the SRS module repair process look like?
